Emphasis on Safety

At Escape Gear, there is great emphasis on ensuring that seat covers in no way hinder the deployment of a vehicle's driver and passenger seat side airbags in the event of a collision. High speed photography in controlled laboratory tests prove that the specially constructed ‘Red Thread’ seam in no way hinders the deployment of side airbags. In every test, side airbags deployed to maximum size, with no deforming, within average time of 8.4 milliseconds. This average deployment time exceeds the Motor manufacturers’ Industry Standard of less than 10 milliseconds. You can drive safely with Escape Gear seat covers.

Motor Vehicle Safety

Airbags provide added protection and improve the safety of both diver and passenger in the event of a collision and/or rollover crashes. These days, most modern trucks and SUVs have a steering wheel and/or dashboard airbag as well as seat-side airbags that provide protection during side impacts.

How do I check if I have airbags?

To check if your vehicle has side airbags, examine the bolster part of your seat (that is, the side of the backseat closest to your vehicle’s door). If your bolster has a sewn-in label that reads, “SRS Airbags”, it means that your vehicle is, in fact, equipped with airbags in both driver and passenger seat rests.

Airbag Design

Before buying seat covers, wouldn’t you like to know that the seat cover manufacturer will guarantee airbag deployment? Escape Gear calls this Red Thread Technology. They believe it is absolutely critical that their seat covers do not hinder the airbag deployment in the event of a collision in any way possible.

Specially Constructed Seam

Escape Gear seat covers are manufactured with a specially constructed seam, designed to burst open without slowing down airbag deployment. The seam itself is sewn with a specific breaking strength thread. A specially made side airbag sewing machine is used to sew at predetermined seam interval tension. There are only four seat cover design possibilities to accommodate side airbags; namely a void, a flap, a zip, or a seam. Of all of them, Escape Gear believes the seam offers the neatest, most functional and most practical solution for side airbags.

8.4 Millisecond Deployment

To be of maximum protection in the event of a collision, the driver and passenger side airbags must deploy to full size within 10 milliseconds of impact. Time and again in laboratory testing, maximum side airbag deployment was achieved with an average time of 8.4 milliseconds.

Tried and Tested

The design must work. Therefore, Escape Gear has done a series of laboratory tests, where vehicle seats are dressed with our seat covers. The side airbag is deployed without failure and is filmed with a high-speed camera to prove this. The footage (provided) is then run through sophisticated software that extrapolates video frames per second, into milliseconds.

In simple terms, it’s a specially formulated polycotton, a combination of both 100% authentic cotton and synthetic polyester fibres. What Escape Gear has developed is a fabric that will give you the comfort and feel of organic cotton whilst maintaining the technical features, durability and wear resistance of a synthetic product.

Long Lasting: Protect your original seat upholstery from harsh and aggressive conditions and ensure your vehicle’s interior remains in mint condition, long after you’ve moved on to another vehicle.

Comfort with Strength: Tough Canvas fabric will give you the comfort and feel of organic cotton whilst maintaining the technical features, durability and wear resistance of a synthetic product.

Water Repellent: The Tough Canvas is water repellent, extremely abrasion resistant, less prone to pilling and static and is technologically superior to most seat fabrics available on the market today.

How Tough is Tough?

At Escape Gear, all fabrics are rigorously tested in laboratory conditions emulating the most severe operating conditions to understand just how well these fabrics perform. When the equipment used to test the fabric had to be shut down after 350,000 rubs - with no obvious damage to the material - it was concluded that THIS fabric could only be called one thing: Tough Canvas.

Tough Canvas is only manufactured in Charcoal. All seat covers are manufactured to retain the safety features of your vehicle's original seats.

Traditional 100% Cotton Canvas

Extra Comfort (Light Khaki & Grey)

Escape Gear's Traditional 100% Cotton Canvas is made from heavy-duty 500g (17oz) cotton - the heaviest grade on the market - and is intricately woven to form a compact and firm material. Not only do they fit effortlessly around your upholstery (while eliminating bunching and creasing when climbing in and out of your car) but will completely protect your vehicle’s interior as well.

Water Repellent: Water is no issue for the Traditional Cotton canvas either. The material becomes 30% stronger when wet making it water repellent, which means that spilt liquids won’t seep through.

Perfect for Summer: The Traditional Canvas is breathable, transmitting moisture away from the body, making it cool and comfortable and, therefore, works well during long-distance driving in the summer heat.

Warm for Winter: While it keeps you cool during the summer, it also provides thermal insulation, trapping air between the fabric fibres to keep you warm in winter. It is weatherproof, retaining its comfort and breathability.

Protecting Your Vehicle's Interior

Not only do they look great, but they fully protect your seats. And should you want to remove them one day – for reasons only you would know! – your original upholstery will still be in showroom condition.

Fit perfect and look great!
Was looking to protect the nice original leather on a new-to-me set of seats in my 80 series. These came highly recommend and did not disappoint! I installed while the seats were on the bench, which made things considerably easier I'm sure.
