Intro

Hi, I'm Paul with Equipt Expedition Outfitters, and today I just want to talk to you a few minutes about the tent that started it all, the Eezi-Awn Series 3 Rooftop tent back in the late 80s.

Eezi-Awn Overview

Eezi-Awn developed a foldable Rooftop tent. It was the first tent to be designed and built in South Africa, and this set the stage for most every Rooftop tent design that has been on the market since. Eezi-Awn is still, in my opinion, the best folding hard or folding Rooftop tent there is on the market. Let's talk about the reasons why, and it comes down to the quality and construction of the tent itself and the materials that are used. They use a 360G ripstop material that is fully waterproof, a wonderful material, very robust and strong. PDC rainfly across the top, spring steel rods hold that rainfly in place. You have rainflies over each of the windows out of the same material, held in place very robustly.

Materials

The base of the tent is a 9mm thick marine-grade plywood surrounded by a perimeter of Moran wood that holds that structure in place. The reason why Eezi-Awn is using marine-grade plywood instead of any of the composites out there on the market is because of the insulation value of that material. They've tried the composites; they don't work. They've moved back to what their original design was. The R-value, the insulation value of that layer, means that they don't have to have a condensation mat under their mattress to mitigate any condensation concerns because those composites absorb temperature from outside very easily and transfer that temperature inside the tent. Because of that, you end up with a warm inside and a cold outside, and they have to do something about that. Because of that plywood layer, there is no condensation. The mattress doesn't need that, simple as it is. The mattress on the inside is a 65mm thick laminated mattress covered in a nice material, a wonderful mattress to sleep on, one of the best mattresses in the market for a foldable tent.

The zippers that are used in the tent on both the main panel and the mesh panels are YKK low-temperature zippers. It's a high tooth count, so it holds everything out, but it also works in any temperature conditions that you're in. These tents have been all over the planet, on every continent, used for decades, and they hold up. Ask the guys that are using them; there's no other tent out there that holds up like an Eezi-Awn. I think it's worth your time and consideration. If you have any questions, please reach out. We'd be happy to help. Thank you.
