Equipt FAQ: Power Distribution Options

Hi, this is Paul with Equipt Expedition Outfitters. Today I'd like to talk a little bit about the distribution of electrical systems in your vehicle. We've talked a lot about how to charge a battery in your vehicle and maintain that battery, but we haven't really chatted a whole lot about getting power where you need to get it in your vehicle.

If you've chosen to go with a hard mount system with a solenoid or DC system based under the hood, now what? Okay, so what we need to do is to run some power through the vehicle. There's multiple ways of starting the power off under the hood, whether it's an inline fuse, a fuse block, or some of the intelligent distribution systems that are out there.

What I want to talk about is the end result. What are we after in the vehicle? Most of the time, it's going to be something of an outlet nature or an information nature, and that's what National Luna has really helped out with here. They've come out with a whole range of opportunities for you to put electrical systems throughout your vehicle, whether it's an SUV, a van, trailer, whatever might be the instance.

We have everything in here from cigarette lighter style plugs to USB ports to combinations thereof, Heli-style ports, voltage and amperage reading both in a graphic scale as well as a digital scale. You can use face plates that are for a flush mount system, or if it's an opportunity for you, we have options to surface mount those outlets.

What's nice about what they've done is they've built them in concert, and it's all based off of the diameter size of the hole. This hole here is a 29 millimeter diameter hole, and it's become pretty much a universal size for providing information out of the ports across the line. So any of these items will fit into a face plate, or some come with their own face plate if you're going to use them individually.

You run a couple of wires to these posts, a positive and a negative, off of your distribution, and these provide the outlets and necessary items and odds and bits in your vehicle to use as necessary.
