HISTORY
A Skottle, pronounced Skaw-tell, is a South African outdoor cooking contraption. Skottles were developed by the South African farmers’ need to find a secondary use for old harrow discs. Creatively, farmers began turning these discs into an outdoor cooking system that could be easily used while out in the field. The Skottle caught on with the public in the 1940s and 50s, and is now synonymous with grilling in South Africa.
Everything you need to order in one place. The TemboTusk Skottle can be used to cook anything at home or while camping. The Tembo Tusk Skottle is 18” across and stands 28” tall. The actual cooking area is the center of the pan, which measures 8-9”. The outer edge section is used to keep food warm. The grill is fabricated in the USA and comes pre-seasoned so it can be used immediately. The Skottle is designed around an inexpensive Coleman style single burner. The burner simply hangs in the frame under the bottom of the Skottle pan. The legs are removable. The carry bag will hold the Skottle pan, burner and up to four 16oz gas bottles. The legs have a separate storage bag with a Velcro closure.
The new Adjustable Leg Skottle Grill Kit is an improvement over the the original Kit in a number of ways. The cooking pan has not changed, however, the all American made Skottle Grill will have new Adjustable legs. The legs will collapse down to 20 inches making them easier to carry and store. Each leg will have a hard stop at 29 inches and 36 inches and fine adjustment for uneven ground.
The second area of improvement will be in the stove burner that will be standard with every Kit. We are upgrading the current stove to include the Kovea Scout Stove. An outstanding quality stove from South Korea. The Kovea stove has excellent low and high flame control with a push button flame starter. The stove has enough power to handle windy weather.
The BlueRidge Overland Gear Carry Bag has also been improved. The bag will include straps on the outside of the bag to slot the shorter legs into. You can now carry and store the Skottle Grill in one package.
This kit contains:
- Skottle Grill
- Adjustable Legs
- 10,000 BTU Single Burner
- Skottle Carry Bag
BURNER
The Tembo Tusk Skottle can also be used with an inexpensive Coleman-style single burner and a gas bottle, where the burner simply hangs in the frame welded to the bottom of the Skottle. These types of burners produce approximately 10,000 BTUs of heat energy, which is more than adequate for the Skottle. Typically, a Coleman burner uses a disposable 16oz gas bottle for fuel; with a proper adapter, a large propane bottle can be used instead.
SETUP
The Tembo Tusk Skottle comes with a frame to hold the burner and three legs to support the pan. The legs are removable and can be stored separately (bag included for both pan and legs). After attaching the legs, install the Coleman-style single burner into the pan’s burner rack. Gently tighten the two eye bolts until the burner is just touching the bottom of the Skottle. Do not over tighten.
COOKING
Lightly coat the pan with olive oil or any cooking oil, wiping off excess. Light the burner and start cooking! Adjust the heat to suit your needs. When cooking several items, push the cooked food up along the edge of the pan and push the uncooked food into the center. Continue this process until all the food is cooked.
Anything that is normally cooked in a pan, skillet, or on a grill, can be cooked in a Skottle--bacon, eggs, sausage, and hash browns are all great ideas for breakfast! While stir fry veggies, steak, and chopped potatoes are great examples of foods that work with the Skottle for lunch or dinner. There is also no better way to cook Boerewors Sausage (South African Farmer’s Sausage) or any other sausage for that matter., and nothing tastes better than a thick cheese quesadilla on a Skottle.
